The Centennial Celebration
Groups from across the Appalachian region where Sharp and Karpeles collected songs are working together to: • present the history of the times and the importance of the work done; • honor Sharp and Karpeles who were responsible for collecting and promoting traditional music, and for Sharp’s formation of the Country Dance and Song Society; • identify events, research, and publications related to Sharp’s and Karpeles’ work; • connect their work with that of other known collectors and connect North Carolina with other southern states that were part of the music collecting area and folk cultural region; • link the varied folk resources in North Carolina to celebrate the rich music traditions throughout the state; • celebrate the descendants of these singers and musicians and amplify the continuation of these folk traditions.
